Synopsis

The Maleo (Macrocephalon maleo) in Taima is one of the Sulawesi's endemic birds that is very unique and has received much attention from the world today. The population of this bird decreased due to habitat degradation and eggs pouching by humans. This research aimed to characterize the nesting ground habitat in Taima, Bualemo, Central Sulawesi, which was conducted in July- August 2019. Field
surveys were conducted to observe the condition of the Maleo habitat and the type of floras in its surrounding area. Area temperature, humidity and sand surface temperature were observed times a day at 06.00, 09.00, 12.00, 15.00 and 18.00. The results show: (1) the nesting ground habitat has 23 plant species (2) the spawning holes range from 20 to 76 cm with an average of 50.66 cm (3) the length and width of egg laying holes range between 55-404 cm and 50 - 245.9 cm respectively (4) Between 06.00 - 18.00 the nesting ground has area temperature, humidity, and sand surface temperature of 29.8oC, 72%, and 40oC respectively. The nesting ground habitat in Taima needs to continuously be protected to help prevent this precious iconic bird from extinction.
